Archaeology/Politics

Archaeology is the study of how human beings in the past interacted with their world, recovered through the detailed investigation of objects, sites, monuments, and landscapes. It is a discipline that works across time scales from the prehistoric to the very recent, and across geographies from local excavations to global patterns of trade and migration. At its best, archaeology tells stories about people who left no written records, restoring complexity and humanity to the deep past.

Pairing it with politics brings the study of power and governance into direct conversation with the material evidence of how past societies were organised and how they understood authority, conflict, and community.

At the University of Glasgow this four-year, full-time Joint Honours programme develops your analytical and interpretive skills across both disciplines. In archaeology you will engage with fieldwork, material culture, and the theoretical frameworks that guide interpretation of the past. In politics you will study political theory, comparative government, international relations, and the major political questions of the present.

The two subjects speak to each other in productive ways: archaeology provides a long-term perspective on political organisation, while political science offers analytical tools that can be applied to how past societies distributed and contested power. A year abroad is built into the programme, broadening your academic experience and giving you exposure to different scholarly traditions.

Graduates of this combination pursue careers in heritage, museums, local and national government, civil service, policy research, journalism, international organisations, and education. The analytical, research, and communication skills developed across both disciplines are widely valued, and the combination of a historical and scientific grounding with contemporary political literacy is distinctive. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in archaeology, politics, heritage management, or related fields, and the degree provides a strong foundation for research or professional training in any of these areas.
