Archaeology

Archaeology is the study of the human past through its material remains: the objects, structures, landscapes, and environmental traces that people left behind. Unlike written history, which depends on literacy and the survival of texts, archaeology can reach back through deep time, examining evidence of human life from its earliest origins across all inhabited continents. It is a discipline that brings together humanistic interpretation with scientific method, drawing on history, anthropology, geology, chemistry, and digital technologies to reconstruct and make sense of past societies.

At Queen's University Belfast, this three-year, full-time degree offers a single honours programme that examines the human past from a broad humanities and social sciences perspective. You will explore a wide range of evidence, from artefacts, monuments, and settlements to entire landscapes, learning to interpret how societies have adapted and developed across very different periods and places. Modules cover world, European, and Irish and British archaeology, from human origins to modern times, and you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with archaeological material and undertaking fieldwork.

Queen's is particularly well placed for the archaeology of Ireland and Britain, a region of extraordinary depth and density in terms of archaeological heritage.

Archaeology graduates develop a distinctive combination of skills: the ability to evaluate evidence critically, reason across multiple sources, manage complex datasets, and communicate findings clearly to specialist and public audiences. Careers in heritage management, museums, environmental consultancy, the planning sector, education, and cultural tourism are all accessible, and many graduates work for or alongside Historic Environment bodies across the UK and Ireland. Postgraduate study in archaeology, heritage, ancient history, or related disciplines is a natural next step for those who wish to specialise or move into academic research.
