Archaeology/ English Language

Archaeology and English language make a compelling intellectual pairing. Archaeology is the study of how people in the past interacted with their world, read through the physical evidence of their objects, sites, monuments, and landscapes, reconstructing lives and societies from material traces that have survived across centuries or millennia. English language study, by contrast, examines how language itself works as a system, how it varies across communities and contexts, how it changes over time, and what it reveals about meaning, identity, and communication.

Both disciplines are fundamentally concerned with interpretation: with reading evidence carefully and drawing well-grounded conclusions.

At the University of Glasgow this four-year MA programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to encounter different academic and cultural traditions and to pursue your interests in another country. In archaeology you will develop skills in fieldwork, material culture analysis, and the study of human societies from prehistory to the recent past. In English language you will explore linguistics, phonology, grammar, historical language change, sociolinguistics, and the analysis of texts and discourse.

The combination trains a particular kind of mind: attentive to evidence, alert to complexity, and comfortable with the patient reconstruction of what is only partially preserved.

Graduates from this combination work in archaeology and heritage, including fieldwork, conservation, museum curation, and cultural resource management. English language skills open additional pathways into education, editing and publishing, speech and language therapy (with further training), communications, and media. The research and analytical skills developed across both disciplines are transferable to many professional contexts, and postgraduate study in either archaeology, linguistics, or related fields is a natural next step for those who wish to specialise.
