Archaeology and Ancient Civilisations
Archaeology and ancient civilisations brings together the material and textual evidence for the human past, asking how we can know what life was like in societies separated from us by centuries or millennia. Archaeology recovers and interprets physical remains, from pottery, tools and buildings to human burials and landscape features, while the study of ancient civilisations draws on written sources, art, mythology and historical records from the ancient world. Together they train you to ask searching questions about evidence, to think critically about interpretation and to engage with the full depth of human history.
At Durham University, this three-year full-time programme is exceptionally well equipped in terms of experiential learning. It includes a sandwich year, giving you the opportunity to undertake fieldwork, research or professional placement, a year abroad at a partner institution, and work placement experience integrated into the programme. Durham's archaeological collections and its research reputation in both classical and prehistoric archaeology provide a strong scholarly context.
You will study archaeological theory and methods, ancient languages and civilisations, field techniques and specialist topics ranging from Roman Britain and Greek culture to prehistoric Europe and beyond.
Graduates from archaeology and ancient civilisations programmes work in museums, heritage organisations, archaeological contracting, historic environment consultancy, education, publishing, broadcasting and the civil service. The research, analytical and communication skills developed across the programme are valued in many professional contexts beyond the heritage sector. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in archaeology, classical studies, heritage management or museum studies, deepening their expertise in a particular period or specialisation.
