Arabic and German is an intellectually unusual pairing that spans two of the world's most significant and very different linguistic traditions. Arabic is the dominant language of the Middle East and North Africa, the language of the Quran and of classical Islamic scholarship, and a living literary culture with over 300 million speakers. German is at the heart of European intellectual and commercial life, the language of Kant, Goethe, and Kafka, and of one of the world's strongest economies.

Studying both develops not just linguistic competence but the capacity for comparative analysis across cultures, literatures, and political traditions that is increasingly rare and valuable.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time degree allows you to study Arabic in combination with German as a joint honours programme. You will develop practical language proficiency in both, building spoken, written, reading, and translation skills, alongside engagement with the literary, cultural, and historical dimensions of each linguistic world. St Andrews emphasises the value of studying Arabic alongside other languages for the comparative perspectives it opens, including on different literatures, cultures, histories, and political economies.

A year abroad is built into the programme, providing immersive experience in one or more of the relevant language communities and deepening the cultural understanding that no classroom can fully replicate.
