About this course

Arabic, French, and Spanish is a trilingual combination that spans three of the world's most widely spoken and culturally significant languages, giving you an extraordinary range of access to the political, literary, and cultural life of vast regions of the globe. Arabic is the primary language of the Middle East and North Africa and the liturgical language of Islam. French is spoken as a first or second language by over 300 million people across Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, and beyond.

Spanish has more than 500 million speakers across Spain, Latin America, and other communities worldwide. Achieving meaningful proficiency in all three is ambitious and demanding, but the professional and personal possibilities it opens are remarkable.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year, full-time programme includes a year abroad, which is central to developing the linguistic depth this combination requires. St Andrews is one of the UK's leading universities for language study, and Arabic in particular has the opportunity to be combined with a wide range of other subjects at the institution, allowing for rich comparative analysis across languages, literatures, and cultures. You will develop advanced proficiency in all three languages through intensive study of language skills and cultural knowledge, engaging with literature, history, politics, and contemporary affairs in each linguistic world.

The year abroad allows you to immerse yourself in one or more of your language communities, which is essential for achieving the fluency this degree demands.

Graduates with trilingual competence in Arabic, French, and Spanish are exceptionally well placed for careers in diplomacy, international journalism, development work, translation and interpretation, international law, and business across a combined reach that spans most of the world's population. Governments, international organisations, NGOs, and multinational companies actively seek people with this depth and breadth of linguistic and cultural knowledge. Postgraduate study in languages, international relations, or translation is a natural next step.
