Arabic - Chinese Studies

Arabic and Chinese are two of the world's most widely spoken and culturally significant languages, and together they offer access to civilisations with extraordinarily long and rich intellectual traditions. Arabic is the language of the Quran, of classical philosophy, of poetry and science that shaped medieval Europe, and of contemporary politics across the Middle East and North Africa. Chinese, in its Mandarin and other forms, is the medium of one of the oldest continuous literary and philosophical traditions in human history, and today the language of the world's most populous nation and one of its largest economies.

At St Andrews, this four-year full-time degree combines Arabic with Chinese Studies in a programme that goes well beyond language acquisition. In Chinese Studies you will explore the breadth and depth of Chinese linguistic and cultural practices, including not only classical and modern literature but also visual and popular cultures, giving you a richer understanding of how China operates as a society. In Arabic you will develop proficiency in the language alongside engagement with the literature, history, and cultures of the Arab world.

A year abroad is central to the programme, providing immersive experience in Arabic and Chinese-speaking environments that develops fluency and cultural understanding in ways that classroom study alone cannot replicate.

The combination of Arabic and Chinese is unusual and therefore genuinely distinctive on a graduate's profile. Career destinations include diplomacy and foreign service, international business and trade, journalism, translation and interpretation, international development, intelligence and security roles, and NGO work focused on the Middle East or East Asia.
