Applied Sports Science

Applied sports science translates the fundamental sciences of physiology, biomechanics, psychology, and nutrition into practice, asking how scientific understanding can be used to improve athletic performance, promote health, and reduce injury. It is a discipline that has moved from the margins to the centre of professional sport over the past three decades, as the competitive margins between athletes have narrowed and the value of marginal gains has become increasingly clear to coaches, teams, and governing bodies. Applied sports scientists work alongside coaches, athletes, and medical teams to design training programmes, analyse performance data, advise on nutrition and recovery, and support the psychological wellbeing of competitors.

At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year programme includes a year abroad, which adds an international dimension to the sports science education and gives you the opportunity to study in a different university environment and sporting culture. Throughout the programme, you will develop a grounding in exercise physiology, biomechanics, sports and exercise psychology, nutrition, and research methods, alongside the practical skills needed to assess and support athletes in real performance contexts.
