About this course

Applied modern languages with translating in French and Spanish is a programme that combines serious linguistic study of two of the world's most widely spoken languages with the professional skills needed to work as a translator. French and Spanish together provide access to a vast range of literary, cultural, and commercial traditions across Europe, the Americas, and Africa, making the combination one of the most globally significant pairings a language student can choose. Translation is not a mechanical activity; it demands deep understanding of both source and target language, sensitivity to register and cultural context, and the judgement to make countless micro-decisions in service of clear and accurate communication.

At Heriot-Watt University, this four-year, full-time MA develops professional translation skills using industry-standard technology alongside high-level linguistic competence in French and Spanish. You will study translation theory and practice across different text types and professional domains, developing both speed and accuracy while learning to use translation memory software and other tools that form part of the professional translator's daily workflow. The programme includes a sandwich year with work placement experience, giving you real professional exposure before you graduate.

The programme is ranked highly for languages in national student surveys, reflecting both the quality of teaching and the career outcomes for graduates. The typical entry tariff is 184 UCAS points.

Graduates from applied modern languages and translating programmes work as professional translators, interpreters, localisation specialists, and language project managers, as well as in roles in international business, publishing, journalism, and the diplomatic service. French and Spanish are among the most commercially significant languages in the world, and graduates with professional competence in both and the technical skills of a translator are genuinely sought after. The sandwich placement frequently leads to professional contacts and sometimes to direct employment.

Postgraduate study in translation, interpreting, or applied linguistics is available for those who wish to go further.

I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” good tra…
