About this course

Applied mathematics is the discipline that uses mathematical techniques to solve real problems in science, engineering, economics, biology, and society. Where pure mathematics explores abstract structures for their own sake, applied mathematics asks how those structures can be brought to bear on the concrete challenges of the world, from fluid dynamics and climate modelling to financial risk and the spread of disease. The distinction is one of emphasis rather than boundary: applied mathematicians are deeply rigorous thinkers who happen to be motivated by problems that have consequences outside mathematics itself.

This four-year full-time degree at the University of Stirling develops your mathematical knowledge and skills across a broad range of applied topics, including differential equations, numerical methods, mathematical modelling, optimisation, and statistical analysis. You will develop the ability to translate a real-world problem into mathematical language, to select and apply appropriate techniques, and to interpret and communicate your results to audiences who may not be mathematicians. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in a different university and country, which broadens your scientific and cultural perspective and strengthens your capacity to work in international environments.

Applied mathematics graduates are among the most versatile in the job market. The ability to model complex systems, work with large data sets, and reason precisely under uncertainty is in demand across finance, data science, actuarial science, engineering, research, the NHS, government, and technology. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in areas such as mathematical modelling, statistics, data science, financial mathematics, or physics, and some go on to doctoral research.

The combination of mathematical depth and real-world orientation that applied mathematics provides is a powerful preparation for a career in which quantitative reasoning is increasingly central to decision-making across almost every field.
