Anthropology

Anthropology is the study of human beings in all their diversity, across time and space. It asks how people live, what they believe, how they organise their societies, and how they have evolved as a biological and cultural species. The discipline is unusual in combining scientific and humanistic approaches, drawing on archaeology, evolutionary biology, social theory, and ethnographic fieldwork to build a picture of what it means to be human that no single approach could achieve alone.

This breadth gives anthropology a distinctive and powerful perspective on contemporary as well as historical questions.

At the University of Winchester, this three-year programme takes a broad approach to the discipline, combining social anthropology, biological anthropology, and archaeology into a single integrated course. Through modules that draw on archaeological evidence, the long-term perspective of human evolution, and present-day examples from societies around the world, you will explore human cultures and behaviours across the past and present. You will learn from staff with expertise in areas including human osteology, religion and society, art and cultural heritage, and migration and transnationalism, with opportunities for external visits and hands-on work with archaeological materials.

This range of experience and evidence develops the comparative, contextual thinking that defines anthropological understanding.

Graduates with a background in anthropology go on to careers in international development, humanitarian work, museum and heritage management, social research, journalism, education, public policy, and community development. The ability to engage with cultural difference with curiosity and analytical rigour is valued by organisations working internationally and within diverse communities. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in social anthropology, archaeological science, human evolution, development studies, or related fields, and some go on to academic research or professional fieldwork in applied anthropological contexts.
