About this course

Combining anthropology and German at the University of Aberdeen is a pairing that takes seriously the idea that understanding what it means to be human requires both rigorous cross-cultural study and deep engagement with a specific language and culture. Anthropology provides the theoretical and methodological tools for studying human societies in all their diversity, while German gives you access to one of Europe's most significant intellectual, literary, and cultural traditions, as well as practical proficiency in a language spoken by over 90 million people across Central Europe.

This five-year full-time programme allows you to develop genuine depth in both disciplines. In anthropology you will engage with ethnographic methods, social theory, and substantive topics ranging from kinship and religion to economic anthropology and the anthropology of contemporary global issues. In German you will build your language skills to a high level while also exploring German literature, history, and cultural thought from the early modern period to the present.

The five-year duration is characteristic of Scottish honours programmes and gives you the time to develop expertise that a shorter degree cannot match.

The combination of anthropological training and German language proficiency opens a wide range of career possibilities with an international character. Graduates go on to work in international development, diplomacy, the civil service, journalism, international business, NGOs, human rights organisations, and cultural institutions. German is consistently in demand in the European labour market and in UK businesses with ties to German-speaking countries.

The anthropological skills you develop, ethnographic sensitivity, cultural analysis, and the ability to work across difference, are valued in sectors from healthcare and education to technology and consulting. Postgraduate study in anthropology, German studies, European studies, or international relations is a natural continuation.
