Animation

Animation is a creative and technical discipline that brings still images to life through the illusion of movement. It encompasses a wide range of techniques and specialisms, from traditional hand-drawn approaches through stop-motion and 2D digital animation to the 3D computer-generated imagery that dominates film, games, and broadcast media today. Motion capture, visual effects, and storytelling through storyboarding are all part of the modern animator's toolkit, and the field continues to evolve as new technologies open new possibilities for interactive and immersive experiences.

The part-time Animation programme at the University of Northampton prepares students for a career in animation across these specialist areas. You will be introduced to the key points in the creative process, from initial concepting through to the production of final animations, developing both the creative thinking and the technical skills required to produce professional-standard animations for a variety of digital media formats including film, television, video games, and augmented or virtual reality. Part-time study allows you to combine your learning with other commitments, making the programme accessible to students who cannot study full time.

You will develop your ability to tell visual stories, design characters and environments, and use industry-standard software to produce work to professional quality. The programme develops both specialist technical skills and the broader creative and critical thinking that distinguishes graduates who can contribute meaningfully to production teams and to independent creative practice.

Graduates from animation programmes pursue careers as animators, motion capture artists, visual effects artists, storyboard artists, character designers, and creative directors across film, television, games, advertising, and digital media. Many also develop portfolios that support careers in the wider digital creative industries or go on to postgraduate study in animation or screen arts.
