About this course

Animation is one of the most technically demanding and creatively expansive of the visual arts. From hand-drawn character animation and stop-motion to three-dimensional computer-generated imagery and motion graphics, animation combines artistic vision with technical skill in ways that have made it central to film, television, games, advertising, and digital media. The discipline requires not just the ability to draw or model, but an understanding of movement, timing, character, storytelling, and the specific properties of each animation technique.

It is a field in which craft and creative intelligence are inseparable.

At the University of Bradford, this three-year, full-time programme includes a foundation year, which provides the creative and technical grounding you need before entering the main degree. The foundation year is particularly valuable for students who are developing their creative practice and need time to build drawing skills, visual thinking, and familiarity with digital tools before tackling degree-level animation work. From the first year of the degree itself, you will work on animation projects across different techniques and contexts, developing your personal creative voice alongside technical competence.

The curriculum covers 2D and 3D animation, character design, storyboarding, visual effects, and the industry workflows and software that professional animators use.

Bradford has a history as a UNESCO City of Film, and the university's film and animation heritage gives the programme a distinctive cultural context that enriches learning in the creative arts.

Graduates from animation programmes work in film and television production companies, games development studios, advertising agencies, digital marketing, visual effects houses, educational media, and architectural and product visualisation. Some build careers as independent animators or filmmakers. Others move into related fields such as motion graphics, UX design, or illustration.

Postgraduate study in animation, digital arts, or screen studies is available for those wishing to develop their practice or pursue research and teaching careers.
