Animation

Animation is a creative and technical discipline that brings images to life through the illusion of motion, creating the characters, worlds, and narratives that populate films, television, games, advertising, and interactive media. It encompasses a wide range of techniques and approaches, from traditional drawn animation and stop-motion to three-dimensional computer-generated imagery and motion capture, and it requires practitioners who can think both visually and technically. A degree in animation develops artistic fluency, storytelling ability, and the technical skills that the industry demands.

At the University of Roehampton, this three-year full-time programme spans the range from technical programming skills through to the creative processes of art and design, making it accessible to students whose strengths lie in different parts of that spectrum. The degree includes a foundation year element, giving you thorough preparation before the main programme begins. A sandwich year is built in, providing the opportunity to work in an animation or creative digital environment before your final year.

A year abroad is also incorporated, and work placement is additionally available, ensuring that you graduate with professional and international experience alongside your creative and technical development.

You will study character design, narrative, visual storytelling, 2D and 3D animation techniques, rigging, and the principles of movement that animate convincing characters and scenes. The creative and technical skills you develop are applicable across the full range of animation contexts.

Graduates go on to work in film and television animation, video games, advertising, virtual reality, educational media, and a wide range of other industries that use animated content. Roles include animator, character designer, rigger, storyboard artist, and technical director. Many build freelance practices alongside studio employment.

Postgraduate study in animation or a related creative discipline is an option for those wishing to specialise further.
