Animal Science

Animal science is the study of the biology, nutrition, health, and management of domestic and farmed animals, as well as the broader scientific understanding of animal behaviour and physiology. It is a discipline with both deep scientific foundations and strong applied dimensions, concerned with how animals can be managed sustainably and humanely in agricultural, research, and companion animal contexts. As food security, animal welfare, and the sustainability of farming systems become increasingly pressing global concerns, the expertise that animal science graduates bring is in growing demand.

At the University of Nottingham, this three-year full-time programme blends theoretical knowledge with hands-on learning, taught by academics who are active researchers at the forefront of their fields. You will gain practical animal handling experience with a range of species including guinea pigs, sheep, hens, and cows, in practical sessions and field trips that complement your academic study. The programme also includes a foundation year element, ensuring you have the scientific grounding needed before the main degree begins.

A sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement are all incorporated, giving you substantial professional and international experience. These features mean that by graduation you will have both the scientific depth and the applied knowledge to contribute to the sector from day one.

You will study animal physiology, nutrition, genetics, reproduction, behaviour, health, and welfare, as well as the production systems through which farmed animals are managed at scale. Research methods and data analysis are developed throughout the degree.

Graduates go on to work in animal production, veterinary support roles, research and development in the feed and pharmaceutical industries, animal welfare organisations, conservation, and agricultural consultancy. Many pursue postgraduate study in animal science, veterinary medicine, or related fields.
