About this course

Anatomical sciences is the study of the structure of the human body at every level, from the gross anatomy of organs and systems to the microscopic organisation of cells and tissues, and the ways in which that structure supports physiological function and breaks down in disease. It is a discipline that combines classical anatomical knowledge with modern understanding from histology, embryology, and neuroanatomy, and it serves as an essential foundation for medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, radiography, and the biomedical sciences more broadly.

At the University of Dundee, this four-year full-time programme examines human anatomy at two levels: the macroscopic structure of the body as a whole, and the microscopic organisation that underlies it. You will study the musculoskeletal system, the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, the nervous system, the viscera, and the special senses, developing a thorough understanding of how the body is constructed and how its parts relate to one another. Dundee is one of the few universities in the UK to offer anatomical sciences as a named degree, and the programme benefits from the university's strengths in medical education, clinical anatomy, and biomedical research.

A year abroad is available for students who want to develop an international perspective on anatomical science and related biomedical fields.

With a typical entry tariff of 136 UCAS points, this degree attracts students with strong scientific backgrounds and an interest in the biological foundations of clinical practice. Graduates work in clinical anatomy, prosection and teaching support in medical schools, histopathology laboratories, medical illustration, and research. Many go on to postgraduate study in medicine, dentistry, clinical anatomy, histopathology, or physiotherapy, using the anatomical foundation this degree provides as the basis for clinical or research careers.

Some pursue doctoral research in structural biology, developmental anatomy, or the anatomical sciences.

Genuinely worthwhile
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the…

Good but not perfect
Overall a solid programme but worth going in with open eyes. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” good transport links make it…
