Aesthetics

Aesthetics is a branch of philosophy concerned with the nature of beauty, art, and sensory experience. It asks what makes something beautiful or sublime, how we should understand and evaluate works of art, what the relationship is between aesthetic experience and emotion, and whether aesthetic judgements can be objective or are always matters of personal taste. These questions have occupied philosophers from ancient Greece to the present day, and the answers have implications not only for how we think about art but for how we understand human experience, culture, and value more broadly.

At University College Birmingham you will study this three-year full-time degree, with a typical entry tariff of 104 points. The programme introduces you to the major philosophical traditions in aesthetics, from Plato's suspicion of art's effects on the soul through Kant's theory of the sublime and the beautiful to twentieth-century debates about the definition of art and the role of intention in interpretation. You will examine questions about the relationship between aesthetic experience and emotion, the nature of representation and expression in different art forms, the ethics of art including questions about offensive or disturbing works, and the role of context, culture, and history in shaping aesthetic response.

Across the programme you will develop the close reading, argument construction, and critical analysis skills that philosophy demands, applied to one of the richest areas of human reflection.

Aesthetics graduates develop exceptional skills in analysis, argument, and written communication that are valued across a wide range of careers, including arts administration and curatorship, cultural journalism and criticism, publishing, education, law, and the civil service. The philosophical training also provides excellent preparation for postgraduate study in aesthetics, philosophy, art history, or cultural theory.
