About this course

Aerospace engineering is the discipline concerned with the design, development, testing, and operation of aircraft, spacecraft, and the systems that enable flight. It brings together fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science, structural analysis, electronics, propulsion, and control systems to address the extraordinary technical challenges of achieving sustained, controlled flight in both atmospheric and space environments. From commercial airliners and military jets to satellites, rockets, and unmanned aerial vehicles, aerospace engineers are responsible for some of the most complex and demanding engineered systems ever created, and the discipline continues to evolve rapidly as the industry responds to the imperatives of decarbonisation, autonomous systems, and new space.

At Sheffield Hallam University, this three-year full-time degree includes a foundation year, which builds the mathematical and scientific foundations needed before the main programme begins, making the course accessible to students from a wider range of prior educational backgrounds. A sandwich year with work placement is also built into the programme, ensuring that you develop direct professional experience in an aerospace or engineering context before graduation. The programme emphasises professional practice from the outset, with industry-led projects and real-world aerospace problems addressed throughout the degree.

You will develop expertise in aerodynamics, structures, propulsion, and systems engineering, alongside the practical and computational skills needed to model, simulate, test, and evaluate aerospace designs.
