About this course

Aeronautics and astronautics represent two of the most technically demanding and intellectually exciting frontiers in engineering. Aeronautics is concerned with the design and analysis of vehicles that operate within the Earth's atmosphere, including commercial aircraft, military jets, and unmanned systems. Astronautics extends these principles into the extraordinary environment of space, where the challenges of propulsion, thermal management, orbital mechanics, and spacecraft systems engineering operate under constraints that have no parallel on Earth.

This four-year programme at Southampton brings these disciplines together, with a particular focus on spacecraft systems engineering that prepares you for the growing space industry.

You will develop a rigorous grounding in the mathematical and physical principles that underpin aerospace engineering, covering fluid dynamics, aerodynamics, structural analysis, propulsion, control systems, and materials science. As the programme progresses, you will specialise in spacecraft systems engineering, examining the design, operation, and integration of satellite systems, launch vehicles, and missions that operate far beyond the Earth's surface. Southampton's engineering school has a strong research culture and well-equipped facilities, and you will have the opportunity to engage with current challenges in aerospace and space engineering throughout the programme.
