About this course

Aeronautical engineering is the discipline concerned with the design, development, and testing of aircraft, their propulsion systems, and the structures and control systems that make safe and efficient flight possible. It combines fluid mechanics and aerodynamics with structural analysis, thermodynamics, propulsion, avionics, and control theory, and demands both rigorous mathematical and scientific reasoning and the creative engineering thinking needed to solve complex design problems. The aerospace sector is one of the most technically demanding and globally significant manufacturing industries, and aeronautical engineers are among its most important practitioners.

At Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, this four-year full-time programme is one of the most demanding aeronautical engineering degrees in the UK. You will study a comprehensive range of aeronautical engineering topics, including during the second year: mechatronics, flight mechanics, propulsion, and turbomachinery, as well as attending a flight-testing course at Cranfield University's National Flying Laboratory Centre. This direct engagement with real aircraft and testing environments is a distinctive feature of the programme, bridging the gap between theoretical study and professional practice.
