Adult Nursing

Adult nursing is the profession dedicated to the assessment, planning and delivery of clinical care for people experiencing illness, injury or health challenges across the adult lifespan. Adult nurses work in hospital settings including medical and surgical wards, intensive care, theatres and outpatient clinics, as well as in community settings, care homes and patients' own homes. The role demands rigorous clinical knowledge, excellent communication skills and genuine compassion, and it places nurses at the forefront of patient care at some of the most significant moments of people's lives.

At Birmingham Newman University, this three-year full-time programme has been developed in partnership with clinical practice partners and informed by the perspectives of people with experience of care services. The course places people at the centre of care delivery, preparing you to assess and manage the health needs of adults in complex and often emotionally demanding situations. You will develop clinical skills across a range of settings and conditions, building your capacity for professional judgement, autonomous decision-making and effective teamwork within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

The programme is grounded in contemporary nursing standards and prepares you for registration as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Nursing registration opens a broad and varied career. Adult nurses work across virtually every healthcare setting, with the option to develop specialist expertise in areas including critical care, oncology, accident and emergency, theatre nursing, diabetes management and many others. Community nursing, health visiting, district nursing and specialist nurse practitioner roles offer opportunities beyond acute hospital settings.

Many nurses go on to pursue advanced clinical practice, nursing leadership, nurse education or research, and postgraduate qualifications in specialist clinical areas are widely available to support career development.
