About this course

Actuarial science is the discipline of applying mathematics, statistics and financial theory to the assessment and management of risk, particularly in insurance and pensions but increasingly across finance, healthcare and other sectors. Actuaries help organisations understand the financial implications of uncertain future events, pricing risk, setting reserves and advising on long-term financial planning. It is a mathematically demanding profession with clear vocational pathways and strong employment prospects, and an actuarial science degree provides direct preparation for the professional examinations that qualify practitioners.

This four-year full-time degree at the University of Essex covers the core actuarial subjects in depth. You will study probability, statistics, financial mathematics, economics, and the mathematical models used to analyse mortality, morbidity and financial risk. The programme's curriculum aligns with the syllabus of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, and upon sufficient attainment in the relevant subject areas, you may gain exemptions from a number of the professional examinations, which significantly shortens the time to full qualification after graduation.

You will also develop skills in data analysis, modelling and financial reasoning that are applicable beyond the actuarial profession.

Graduates from actuarial science programmes are in strong demand. The traditional actuarial roles in life and general insurance, pensions and reinsurance remain major employers, but actuarial skills are increasingly valued in investment management, risk management, healthcare analytics and financial consultancy. Many graduates continue directly toward Fellowship of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, combining employment with the remaining professional examinations.

Postgraduate study is also an option for those who wish to develop research or specialist expertise in statistics, mathematical finance or risk management.
