About this course

Acting and contemporary fashion design is an unusual combination, but one with genuine logic: both disciplines are concerned with identity, presentation, and the ways in which appearance and behaviour communicate meaning. Acting asks you to inhabit characters, to understand motivation, to use your voice and body with precision, and to collaborate in creating live and recorded performance. Contemporary fashion design asks you to think about clothing as a cultural artefact as well as a functional object, to design with intention and awareness, and to respond to the aesthetic and social currents of the moment.

At Liverpool Hope University, this four-year full-time programme allows you to develop skills and knowledge in both fields, bringing them into dialogue in ways that enrich each. Your acting studies will develop your physical and vocal technique, your understanding of character and text, and your ability to perform across stage and screen contexts. Your fashion design studies will develop your design and making skills, your understanding of the contemporary industry, and your capacity to create work with a clear creative rationale.

A sandwich year gives you extended professional experience, a year abroad broadens your creative and cultural horizons, and work placement experience is embedded throughout the programme.

Graduates pursue careers in professional acting, theatre production, costume design, fashion design and styling, the costume departments of film and television productions, fashion education, and creative direction. The combination of performance intelligence and visual design thinking also opens roles in events, retail, brand identity, and arts administration. Further study in acting, fashion design, or costume for performance is available for those who wish to deepen their specialism.
