About this course

Accounting is the discipline through which organisations track, report on, and account for their financial activities. It is the foundation on which business decision-making rests: without reliable financial information, managers cannot plan, investors cannot assess value, and regulators cannot hold organisations to account. Studying accounting at degree level gives you both the technical skills to prepare and interpret financial information and the analytical capacity to understand what that information means in the context of real organisations and markets.

At Birkbeck this part-time programme includes a foundation year that prepares you for the rigours of degree-level study before you progress into the main accounting curriculum. London's status as a global financial centre makes Birkbeck an exceptionally well-positioned place to study accounting: the city provides access to a professional community that spans the full range of accounting and finance practice, from Big Four audit firms and global investment banks to public sector finance and the accounts departments of every kind of organisation.

You will develop mastery of the core areas of accounting, including financial reporting, management accounting, taxation, audit, and financial analysis, alongside the broader business context that accounting operates within. The programme builds both technical knowledge and the professional skills, including clear communication, analytical thinking, and ethical judgement, that employers in the accounting profession consistently look for in graduates.

Graduates are well positioned for careers in public practice, corporate finance, management accounting, audit, taxation, and financial management across the private and public sectors. Many go on to complete professional qualifications with bodies such as ACCA, ICAEW, or CIMA, using the degree as a strong platform for professional study. The part-time structure makes it accessible to students who are managing study alongside other commitments.

Genuinely worthwhile
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the careers office is relentless about getting you internships. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if yo…
