About this course

Accounting and mathematics is a combination with deep intellectual coherence. Accounting is the system through which organisations measure, communicate, and reason about their financial activity, and its practice depends on the ability to work precisely with numbers, to construct and evaluate arguments about what figures mean, and to apply judgement under uncertainty. Mathematics develops exactly those capacities at a deeper level, building the logical, analytical, and quantitative thinking that makes the most demanding accounting and financial roles accessible.

At the University of Glasgow, this four-year full-time programme develops genuine depth in both disciplines simultaneously. On the accounting side you will study financial reporting, management accounting, auditing, taxation, and the frameworks that govern financial disclosure. On the mathematics side you will work in pure and applied mathematics and statistics, building the analytical and quantitative skills that extend well beyond what accounting alone would require.

A year abroad is part of the programme, broadening your intellectual and personal horizons. The entry tariff of 232 points reflects the academic demands of combining two rigorous disciplines at this level.

Graduates from accounting and mathematics programmes are exceptionally well placed for professional training with accountancy bodies, often with strong exemptions from professional examination papers. Careers span public practice accounting, financial analysis, actuarial work, investment banking, management consultancy, and quantitative roles in financial services. The mathematical depth the degree provides also opens doors in data science, risk modelling, and fintech roles where accounting knowledge and quantitative ability combine.

Postgraduate study in finance, mathematics, statistics, and data science is a natural route for those who wish to specialise further.

This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the consulting projects with real companies genuinely prepare you for the working world. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city …
