About this course

Accounting and finance sits at the core of how organisations measure, manage, and report their financial activity. Accounting provides the systems and standards through which businesses and public bodies record transactions, prepare financial statements, and communicate with investors and regulators. Finance examines how money is raised, invested, and managed over time, drawing on economic theory and quantitative analysis to understand financial markets, corporate decisions, and risk.

Together they provide the analytical foundation for a wide range of professional and commercial careers.

The University of Reading's four-year full-time degree in accounting and finance with year abroad includes an international study experience at a partner institution. This adds considerable value to a professional qualification in disciplines that operate in global financial markets and within international regulatory frameworks. You will study financial and management accounting, corporate finance, financial markets and institutions, investment analysis, taxation, auditing, and quantitative methods.

Reading has strong connections with professional accountancy bodies, and the programme is designed with professional training pathways in mind, providing exemptions from some examinations for those who go on to pursue chartered accountancy or related qualifications. The year abroad enriches your education and develops the cross-cultural fluency that is increasingly expected in international finance careers.

Graduates from accounting and finance programmes go on to work in public practice, corporate finance, investment banking, asset management, financial control, treasury, audit, and financial consultancy. The degree provides a strong foundation for the professional qualifications offered by accountancy bodies, and many graduates complete further training to qualify as chartered accountants or financial analysts. The skills in quantitative analysis, financial reasoning, and regulatory understanding the degree develops are valued across every sector where financial decision-making is important.
