About this course

Accounting and finance are the disciplines that enable organisations to understand their financial position, manage their resources effectively, and account to investors, regulators, and other stakeholders. Accounting produces the records, reports, and analyses on which business decisions depend, while finance applies economic theory to questions of investment, risk, and the pricing of financial assets. Together they provide the foundation for careers in professional services, corporate management, investment, and the public sector.

At the University of Southampton, this programme teaches you to prepare and interpret financial and managerial information for a variety of users, developing both technical competency in accounting practice and the conceptual understanding of financial management. The degree includes a placement year, extending the programme to four years full-time and giving you substantial professional experience in a business or financial organisation. You will study financial reporting, management accounting, corporate finance, taxation, and audit, alongside quantitative methods and the regulatory frameworks within which financial professionals operate.

Graduates of accounting and finance with placement programmes are among the most employment-ready in the social sciences. The placement year gives you a significant professional advantage and often leads directly to a graduate role with your placement employer. Many go on to professional accountancy training with firms in practice or industry, qualifying as chartered accountants or certified financial professionals.

Others build careers in corporate finance, investment, financial analysis, risk management, and public sector finance. The degree also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in accounting, finance, or business.

A great decision

Highly recommend
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the accounting and finance streams are taught by practitioners, not just academics. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later year…
