Accounting and Finance

Accounting and finance provides the analytical and technical foundation for two of the most important functions in any organisation. Accounting gives organisations the ability to record, classify and report their financial activities, to account for their stewardship of resources and to provide the information that stakeholders need to make informed decisions. Finance applies economic theory and quantitative methods to questions of investment, capital allocation, risk management and the valuation of financial assets.

Together they describe the knowledge base needed for a wide range of professional roles, from practising accountants and financial analysts to corporate treasurers, fund managers and financial controllers.

At the University of Suffolk this BSc programme is designed with a forward-looking focus, preparing you for a successful career in finance, accounting and business. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work-placement experience, giving you substantial professional and international experience alongside your academic studies. These opportunities to apply your knowledge in real financial and business environments, and to experience financial practice in a different national context, are increasingly valued by employers and professional bodies as evidence of the rounded capability that modern accounting and finance roles demand.

The programme runs full time over three years of degree study.

You will study financial reporting, management accounting, corporate finance, investment, taxation, auditing and the regulatory frameworks governing financial practice, alongside the quantitative and analytical methods that support rigorous financial analysis.

Graduates typically pursue professional qualifications with bodies including the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants or the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, and work in public practice, corporate finance, financial services and management. Postgraduate study in accounting, finance or business administration is also a well-established route.
