Accounting and Finance

Accounting and finance lie at the core of every organisation's decision-making. Accounting provides the systematic recording, classification, and reporting of financial transactions, giving managers and investors the information they need to understand performance and allocate resources. Finance applies economic theory and quantitative methods to the management of money, the valuation of assets, and the assessment and management of risk.

Together, the two disciplines provide a comprehensive foundation for careers in professional practice, corporate roles, and financial markets.

The BSc Accounting and Finance at the School of Oriental and African Studies is a three-year full-time programme with a foundation year, which is designed to ensure that students from a range of academic backgrounds are well prepared for the demands of the main degree. SOAS brings a distinctive international and cross-cultural perspective to the study of business, finance, and accounting, situating these disciplines within a global context that includes the economies of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The programme has a typical entry tariff of 104 points.

You will study financial reporting, management accounting, auditing, corporate finance, investment, and the regulatory frameworks within which financial practice operates, developing both technical competence and the analytical skills to apply that knowledge in complex, real-world situations.

Graduates are well placed to pursue professional qualifications with bodies such as the ICAEW, ACCA, or CIMA, and many enter roles in audit, tax, corporate finance, banking, asset management, and financial consultancy. The international orientation of an SOAS degree is a genuine differentiator for graduates seeking to work in multinational organisations or in emerging and frontier markets. Postgraduate study in finance, international business, or related disciplines is also a well-travelled route.
