The Role & Expectations
As a veterinary anaesthetist, you're a crucial part of the surgical team that cares for animals going into theatre. Your job is to make sure they're properly put to sleep, stay comfortable and safe throughout the operation, and wake up without problems. It requires technical skill - knowing which drugs to use and how to watch for any changes - and real care for the animal's wellbeing.
Before surgery you'll check the animal's health history and decide on the best plan. During surgery you'll give the right drugs at the right time, watch their heartbeat and breathing carefully, and be ready to change what you're doing if needed. After they wake up, you'll watch them recover and make sure they're comfortable. You'll also talk to the owners about what's happening and what to expect at home. The equipment matters too - you'll look after and test the machines that help you do this job safely.
Daily Responsibilities
- Conduct pre-anesthetic evaluations of animal patients to assess health and suitability for anesthesia.
- Administer anesthetics and monitor vital signs during surgical procedures to ensure animal safety.
- Collaborate with veterinarians to develop tailored anesthetic plans based on individual animal needs.
- Manage post-anesthetic recovery, ensuring animals regain consciousness safely and comfortably.
