Fine art is the practice and critical study of making, asking what it means to produce visual and material objects with intention, craft, and ideas embedded in them. It is one of the oldest and most contested of human activities, and studying it at degree level means developing not only technical skill across a range of media but also the conceptual and critical thinking needed to understand what art does in the world, why it is made, and how it connects to the social, historical, and political contexts from which it emerges. At the University of Cumbria, this three-year full-time programme takes an interdisciplinary approach, developing professional-level skills across drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, photography, filmmaking, and digital media. You will experiment across these disciplines rather than being confined to a single medium from the start, developing a material intelligence and a range of practical competences that inform each other. The programme encourages you to embed your own experiences and perspectives in your work, making each piece a reflection of considered artistic thinking rather than technical demonstration alone.

Critical and historical contextualisation is woven into the degree, ensuring that your practical work is informed by knowledge of the broader tradition and contemporary practice within which it sits.

Fine art graduates enter a wide range of careers, both directly in the arts and in fields that value the creative, analytical, and communication skills the degree develops. Many graduates work as practising artists, often combining studio practice with teaching, community arts work, or commercial commissions. Others move into arts administration, curatorship, gallery management, arts education, design, illustration, and the creative industries more broadly.

The discipline's emphasis on problem-solving, critical reflection, and independent practice also translates well into careers in advertising, product design, film and television production, and digital content creation.
