BA Human Geography
About this course
Human geography is the branch of geography that investigates the relationships between people and places, examining how humans organise themselves across space, how societies shape the environments they inhabit, and how geographical processes, from migration and urbanisation to globalisation and inequality, shape human lives. It is a discipline at the heart of many of the most pressing challenges of our time, from food insecurity and climate displacement to urban poverty and the governance of global commons, and it approaches these challenges through rigorous social science methods and spatial analysis. This four-year full-time degree at Queen Mary University of London equips you to examine the complex interactions between people, places, and planet across a wide range of scales and contexts. You will engage with human geographical research on topics including migration, economic development, sustainable development, urban change, and the politics of the environment, developing both quantitative and qualitative research skills alongside the analytical frameworks to understand how geography shapes human experience. Queen Mary's London location provides a rich urban and social context for the subject's concerns. A typical entry tariff of 120 points applies. Human geography graduates pursue careers in planning, urban development, international development, environmental organisations, NGOs, the civil service, local government, geographic information systems, sustainability consultancy, and social research. The combination of spatial thinking, social science methods, and contextual understanding the degree develops is valued across many sectors. Postgraduate study in human geography, urban planning, development studies, environmental policy, or social research methods is a natural continuation.
