BSc Geography (with integrated foundation year)
About this course
Geography is the study of the Earth's surface as the site of human living and working, encompassing both the physical processes that shape landscapes, climate, and ecosystems and the human dimensions of how people organise their lives in space, how communities adapt to environmental change, and how global forces interact with local places. It is a discipline of unusual breadth that develops both quantitative and qualitative skills, and it is increasingly central to some of the most pressing challenges facing humanity, from climate change and biodiversity loss to urbanisation, migration, and resource scarcity. At the University of Cumbria, this four-year, full-time programme includes an integrated foundation year that builds the academic and scientific foundations needed before progressing to degree-level geography. The foundation year is set at Cumbria's Carlisle Fusehill Street campus and is designed to be supportive and confidence-building, preparing you fully for the demands of the degree that follows. As you advance through the programme, you will combine your curiosity about the world with practical fieldwork skills and digital analytical tools, exploring both physical and human geographical questions through hands-on investigation. Cumbria's extraordinary natural environment, encompassing the Lake District, the northern Pennines, and the Solway coast, provides an exceptional living laboratory for geographical fieldwork. A typical entry tariff of 104 points reflects an accessible admissions threshold. Graduates from geography programmes go on to careers in environmental consultancy, urban and regional planning, GIS and geospatial analysis, conservation and land management, international development, education, the civil service, and a wide range of other fields that value the combination of analytical thinking, environmental awareness, and practical fieldwork skills the degree develops. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in geography, environmental management, town planning, or related fields.
