The Role & Expectations
The work is wrapping and packing items, carrying and loading furniture and boxes, driving or helping load the van, and unloading carefully at the other end. Physical strength, teamwork and care matter, since you handle people's valued and sometimes fragile possessions and must avoid damage and injury through good lifting and packing.
The work is heavy, on your feet all day and often involves early starts, long days and travel, with busier spells in summer and at month-ends, and pay usually starts around the minimum wage plus possible tips. It can be tiring, but the variety and teamwork appeal to many.
No qualifications are needed and you learn on the job, with training on safe lifting and packing. A driving licence, and for larger vans the right category, helps you take on more, and experience can lead to crew leader or driver roles.
Daily Responsibilities
- Wrap and pack belongings safely
- Dismantle and reassemble furniture
- Carry and lift boxes and furniture
- Load and unload the van carefully
- Protect items and floors from damage
- Work as part of a moving team
- Help customers settle items in their new place
