The Role & Expectations
The work is planning episodes, booking and recording guests, editing audio, adding music and sound, and publishing and promoting the show. A good ear, attention to detail and storytelling sense matter, along with organisation, since you juggle guests, deadlines and the technical side of clean, well-paced audio.
Some producers are employed by media companies or studios, while many are self-employed working for several shows, with income that varies and often starts modestly. The work mixes creative editing with admin and tech, and building clients or an audience takes time.
There are no strict qualifications - many learn through doing, online tutorials and a media or audio course - but a portfolio of good work matters most. Knowing the editing software and having a good ear for audio are the real essentials, and self-employed producers handle their own tax.
