The Role & Expectations
The job is taking in and sorting donated clothes, books and bric-a-brac, checking and pricing items, arranging window and shop displays, and serving on the till. Being friendly, honest and organised matters, along with a good eye for what will sell and the patience to handle a lot of donations.
Many roles are volunteer, while paid posts such as shop manager or assistant tend to start around the minimum wage. Hours can include weekends, the work involves standing, lifting and sorting through dusty donations, and there is a strong community feel.
No qualifications are needed and you learn on the job, with paid roles often coming after volunteering first. It is a common first taste of retail and can lead to shop supervisor or manager roles within a charity.
Daily Responsibilities
- Sort and check donated items
- Price and tag goods for sale
- Arrange shop and window displays
- Serve customers and work the till
- Keep the shop clean and tidy
- Handle Gift Aid and donation paperwork
- Support and guide volunteers
